Apple has made it official: the iPad will go on sale on Saturday, April 3.

The iPad will be available on that date in the U.S. only, perhaps giving credence to the recent rumors that manufacturing delays would limit the launch to the U.S. The device will go on sale in late April in the U.K., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Switzerland. The April 3 date is slightly later than the late March timeframe originally announced.

Apple will begin accepting U.S. pre-orders through its website for the iPad on March 12. This will allow customers to reserve a WiFi or 3G model and then pick it up at an Apple retail store on April 3 (presumably without waiting in a long line, but we’ll see).

Dear rumor-mill: let’s make up our minds, huh? A report earlier in the week claiming that manufacturing problems could delay the iPad’s worldwide launch and limit the U.S. launch to 250,000-300,000 units was quickly debunked. Today, though, a new report of minor issues forecasts new iPad delays.

The report, issued by an analyst from Think Equity, reports that the delays are neither from glass or manufacturing, but that they will lead to there being just 200,000-250,00 iPads available at launch. This report doesn’t forecast that the launch date will slip, just that there won’t be many iPads to buy.

The report earlier in the week was also from an analyst. Other recent rumors have had the iPad set to launch on March 26. Perhaps Apple can give us some clarity here?

Apple has filed suit against mobile phone maker HTC, alleging that HTC is infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s interface, architecture, and hardware.

HTC makes phones that run both Google’s Android OS and Windows Mobile, which compete with the iPhone OS. The complaint alleges that iPhone patents are infringed in HTC models including: Nexus One, Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, Touch Pro2, myTouch 3G, Hero, and Droid Eris.

According to AppleInsider, among the patents Apple claims are being infringed include:

“Time-Based, Non-Constant Translation Of User Interface Objects Between States”
“Touch Screen Device, Method, And Graphical User Interface For Determining Commands By Applying Heuristics”
“Unlocking A Device By Performing Gestures On An Unlock Image”
“List Scrolling And Document Translation, Scaling, And Rotation On A Touch-Screen Display”
“Automated Response To And Sensing Of User Activity In Portable Devices”
“Object-Oriented Event Notification System With Listener Registration Of Both Interests And Methods”

Depending on how this shakes out, this suit could deal quite a blow to a rival handset maker. More on this as it develops. Engadget has HTC’s statement on the suit.
